It truly was a “must win” game for the Downend Flyers women’s first team on Sunday 12th May as they hosted Bitton in their final match of the season.

Following a barren spell of eight league losses on the spin, Dean Giles’ charges knew they needed to avoid defeat by more than two goals to eschew the wooden spoon and a win to climb clear of the dreaded drop zone.

Having to play the game at Downend School due to their Pomphrey Hill home now being given over to Carson’s & Mangotsfield cricket team for the summer, the Flyers shrugged off this change of venue to record the most vital of wins! The crucial victory was secured through the boots of Beth Pitman who bagged a brace and Brooke Moore who added a third, Bitton just managing a single consolation goal.

The three points was in fact enough to lift the “violanero” up to 7th place in the 10 team division, providing a platform to build from for next season. Facing the prospect of demotion are another local side Mangotsfield United and Bristol Rovers Development. Our ladies celebrated their salvation this season by rehydrating themselves in the city centre that evening.

Meanwhile our other two women’s teams have now also secured their places in their relative divisions to embed our stature as one of the biggest women’s teams in the south west with over 80 players across the three senior sides.

For our 20 girls sides, they are also now finishing their league campaigns and embark on an exciting summer of tournaments, especially of course our own jamboree on 22/23 June on Johnson Road fields. Why not pop down and see the joy of female football for yourselves?!
