The festive decorations may have come down but the form of the senior teams is on the up! Our first team are celebrating only losing one game in their last five, including back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The first game in the brace of victories was an early Christmas present as we dispatched our fledgling local rivals Mangotsfield United 2-0. We completed the pair of triumphs in the first week of January as we traveled to Lockleaze sports centre to face the well-resourced Bristol Rovers Development side. Ellie Brockton, Brooke Moore and Bethany Pitman all rustled the onion bag once apiece as a Rovers own goal completed a quartet of scores for the Flyers in a fine 4-2 victory that ensured all three points left Purdown for BS16.
They say winning is contagious and that certainly seems to be the case as our reserves have also been getting in on the act. They enjoyed an unbeaten December in the league as, following a pulsating 4-4 draw against fellow bird themed club Red Falcon, they recorded consecutive away victories without conceding against Mangotsfield United reserves and Abbeymead Rovers.
Meanwhile our development team have been waiting a while get back into league action and will look to build on their last game in the division which was a fantastic 6-2 victory away at Ashton Keynes.
Like most football clubs across the region it’s been a frustrating time for adult and youth teams alike with the wet weather but fingers crossed that our 19 girls teams and three senior teams can all get some action this month with the more clement weather we are now experiencing!
Behind the scenes the club is already preparing for our annual girls tournament at the end of June - more info on that very soon - and we are always on the look out for enthusiastic individuals to join our coaching teams so if you are interested please get in touch! Info@downendflyers.com
